Fire chars 5 acres in Waiawa

Honolulu firefighters extinguished a four- to five-acre fire Sunday in Central Oahu.

The fire started at about 1 p.m., some 200 feet from Waiawa Prison Road, and burned dry underbrush and tall California grass, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins.

He said about 15 firefighters brought the slow-moving blaze under control in about one hour and fully extinguished it in about three hours.

The cause was undetermined.
