Father’s Day meant a little more for Howard "Humphry" Kruse, 85, because the triplets he and his ex-wife Dorothy Tam had are turning 60 this year.
Howard Kruse Jr., John Kruse and Kalei Kruse Kimhan were born Aug. 15, 1954, at St. Francis Hospital. They were the first set of triplets born at St. Francis and the fourth known set on Oahu. They attracted much attention on outings because triplets were so rare in Hawaii at the time.

The triplets had planned to gather at their dad’s Kailua home on Father’s Day June 15 but John’s job with the Federal Aviation Administration had him flying to Guam and he could not join them.
Kalei is business manager for Windward Boats Inc. and Howard Jr. is an electrician at The Royal Hawaiian hotel, where he has worked for 33 years. Howard Sr. is a semi-retired salesman and was manager of Pali Bowling Lanes in Kailua for 20 years. He has been married to the former Sylvia Pao since 1972.
Howard Sr. also has five stepchildren. At last count, he has 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The triplets will celebrate their 60th birthday Aug. 15 at Howard and Sylvia’s home. Their mom and other family members will attend …
