Shojis help U.S. team stay undefeated
Hawaii’s Kawika Shoji came off the bench to start Set 2 and help the U.S. men’s national volleyball team remain unbeaten in World League play with a 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 win over Bulgaria on Friday at Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Shoji (‘Iolani, Stanford) replaced Micah Christenson (Kamehameha, USC) at setter as the U.S. improved to 7-0 in World League. Shoji finished with nine assists, two aces, a kill and a team-high nine digs.
Shoji’s younger brother, Erik (Punahou, Stanford), the U.S. libero, had four digs and 11 excellent receptions on serve against Bulgaria (0-7).
Taylor Sander (BYU) finished with a match-high 20 points, with 14 kills, three blocks and three aces.
The teams meet again Saturday at the Sears Center Arena, the final domestic stop for the Americans, who need one more victory to clinch a spot in the final round July 16-20 in Italy. The U.S. concludes pool play over the next two weeks with two matches each in Russia and Serbia.

Siordia wins silver medal
Vincent Siordia of Boxfit808 won a silver medal Friday, and Kawano Boxing Club’s Logan Yoon advanced to the finals at the Adidas National Boxing Championships in Oxnard, Calif.
Siroda lost to Ernesto Mercado of G2G Pomona (Calif.) at 80 pounds in the 13-14 division.
Yoon defeated Rosario Real of Hard Knocks in the 125-pound semifinal of the 15-16 division.
