A woman and three children are safe after a fire broke out in their Ewa Beach house when they were home, Honolulu Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters got a call for a structure fire at 10:34 a.m. Sunday and arrived at 91-1638 Laupai Street at 10:39 a.m.

Flames were beginning to extend to the second floor when firefighters arrived, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.

The fire was under control at 11 a.m.

Two adults and three children occupy the house. At the time of the fire a woman and three children were home.

The woman evacuated the children safely but went back into the house for the pets when she got trapped, Jenkins said.

She climbed out of the second floor garage window to the roof and neighbors were able to bring her down safely with household ladders, he said.

No injuries were reported.

The kitchen is said to be the origin on the fire but the cause and the damage estimate is still under investigation.

"We really want to stress that you do not go back inside once you evacuate," Jenkins said.

The Red Cross is assisting the people who lived at the home with shelter, food, and clothing.
