An Oahu grand jury Tuesday indicted a 30-year-old surfer on an attempted-murder charge for allegedly driving at and hitting a 73-year-old woman with her car in Waikiki last week.
Jill Anjuli Hansen was charged with second-degree attempted murder, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and attempted unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. Her bail was set at $1 million.
Police said Hansen followed Elizabeth Conklin into a secured parking garage at Diamond Head Apartments on May 14 and intentionally hit Conklin with her Volkswagen sedan as she got out of her vehicle.
While Conklin was partially wedged under another vehicle parked in the garage, Hansen again tried to strike her, reversing her car and accelerating toward the injured 73-year-old woman, according to a police affidavit filed in Honolulu District Court.
She was unable to hit her because of Conklin’s position under the parked vehicle. Then, Hansen reversed a second time and was about to drive her sedan toward Conklin when the building’s maintenance technician, Christopher Khoury, shattered Hansen’s rear car window with a crowbar to get her attention and stop her from hitting Conklin again, according to the affidavit.
Hansen stopped, exited her vehicle and yelled, "My father made me do this, he’s a high-powered attorney," according to the affidavit. She eventually drove out of the parking garage and fled.
Khoury identified Hansen in a photographic lineup. After conducting searches and surveillance at various locations in Honolulu, officers arrested Hansen that evening after they spotted her in front of her Seaview Avenue apartment in Manoa.
Her father, Gregory M. Hansen, could not be reached for comment. Khoury declined to comment.
In an interview with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Conklin speculated that Hansen may have tried to kill her for her car, a white 2014 BMW328i station wagon. Conklin was treated at the Queen’s Medical Center for a concussion and other injuries. She has no memory of the attack.
Following Hansen’s arraignment at Honolulu District Court on Monday, she tried to escape while being processed at about 2:30 p.m. at the intake area of the Oahu Community Correctional Center, according to state officials.
Hansen attempted to slip behind a staffer who was walking through the door that leads to the sally port, or secured entryway, where vans pull in.
"Thanks to the quick actions of our staff, they immediately grabbed her and stopped her from getting any further. She never got outside the intake area," said Toni Schwartz, spokeswoman of the Department of Public Safety.
Hansen has a history of making threats. In January 2012 her father filed a temporary restraining order against her after she threatened to kill him. He was granted a two-year protective order that expired in February.
In May 2013 she filed a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, accusing him of physical abuse and threatening to kill her. The case was dismissed a month later. According to court records, her ex-boyfriend wrote a declaration letter to Oahu’s Family Court that claims of abuse and threats by him against Hansen were false.
In the letter, her ex-boyfriend said it was Hansen who harassed him and threatened his life, her own life and the life of any woman he was involved with. While living in Oceanside, Calif., in 2010, her ex-boyfriend alleged Hansen vandalized his vehicle more than once. On a different occasion he also alleged Hansen broke into his home and poured coffee over him and his then-girlfriend while they were sleeping.
