After a year away, Kailua is back where it belongs.
Dalton Kalama drilled a single to the wall in right field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to score Peter Kanoho from second and Kailua beat Mililani 4-3 on Friday night at Hans L’Orange Park.
"I was just thinking of getting the next guy up," Kalama said. "I just went with the pitch and it turned out the right way for me. Don’t think, just hit."
The Surfriders were bombed out of the OIA tournament by Campbell 13-0 in the semifinals last year as the defending champion. They did much better when they walked onto the field as just another team in a stacked tournament on Saturday.
Kanoho, who walked three times and scored each time, set up Kalama’s heroics with a four-pitch walk with one out off Mililani starter Cole Nakachi. Brendan Odo then slapped a high bounder for a ground out to second that moved the runner over and Kalama took a ball before hitting his tailing line drive down the line. Mililani right fielder Adam Connell tried to track it down, but he had no chance.
"He has been doing that all year for us," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "It was not too surprising."
The Surfriders, who play in the OIA championship on Saturday at Hans L’Orange, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kanoho scored on an error on a ball hit by Lawson Faria. Mililani put a runner on third with one out in the top of the second, but failed to score him when Kailua brought the infield in. With Nakachi opposing them, the Surfriders knew that every run would matter. Nakachi threw a complete game with six strikeouts.
"They probably thought it was going to be a close game and they turned out to be right," Mililani coach Mark Hirayama said. "Kailua battles for seven innings — they are tough and not going to give up."
Mililani took the lead in the top of the third with two runs off a single by Sean Sonognini and a double by Connell and chased Kailua starter Matthew Hanano an inning later with another run on a leadoff triple by Justice Nakagawa and a double by Devin Awai.
Knocking Hanano out of the box turned out to be the worst thing the Trojans could have done. Freshman lefty Joey Cantillo came on and retired 10 straight batters, throwing the final four innings without giving up a hit.
"That guy is a gamer," Ishigo said. "I coached him when he was growing up — he is the same age as my kid. He has always pitched in the big games, so this is nothing to him, just another game."
Kailua pulled within a run in the fifth on a single by Faria and tied it an inning later when Noah Auld led off with a home run over the fence in left field.

Campbell 9, Roosevelt 3
The Sabers sparked a big inning with a lot of small ball and beat the Rough Riders in the OIA semifinals.
"We have been struggling for runs and I really wanted to make sure we got runners in scoring position to just give us a chance," Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "That’s us — we are going to scratch for runs and we did that in that inning and took advantage when they gave us extra outs."
The Sabers, who beat Mililani for the title last year, move on to play Kailua on Saturday for the championship.
Campbell broke a 2-2 tie with a seven-run fourth inning.
Dorrien Hermosura led off the fourth inning with a single through the box, and Tryzen Patricio tried to bunt him over twice, but his effort went foul both times. He squared a third time, then pulled the bat back and punched a single through the hole and into right field.
Zachary Kapihe then tried to bunt them over, but Roosevelt third baseman Dustin Tsukano had no play and the Sabers had the bases loaded with no outs. Blayze Arcano blooped the first pitch he saw just behind second base, but Roosevelt’s infield was in and it landed safely to give Campbell the lead 3-2.
Zachary Recolan squeezed home Kapihe. Campbell tacked on two runs on an error and two more on a double by Hermosura to exit the fourth inning up 9-2.
