Jewelry maker and hand-dyed pareo maker Olivia Turner doesn’t just sell her own creations at Tasi Boutique in Waialua.

She also sells the made-in-Hawaii, designed-in-Hawaii or inspired-by-Hawaii clothing, swimsuits, accessories and more that others make.

Turner described her shop as a "beachy boutique," and in fact, "Tasi" means "ocean" in Chamorro, a language spoken in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. "My mother is Chamorro," she explained.

Turner’s eye-catching seashell jewelry including bangles, earrings and more, some with Tahitian pearls is displayed on the wall at the shop’s entrance.

Items range from $17 to $200; some can be mother-daughter sets, and all are sterling silver or 14-karat gold-filled, handmade by Turner herself. She’s a diver, so she also collects all the shells she uses in her jewely creations from treasured locations along Oahu’s famed North Shore.

Those of a certain age might be compelled to buy a puka shell necklace (from $30) to wear, out of nostalgia for more carefree times.

During your columnist’s visit, a lady came in wanting jewelry made with shells she had found herself, and Turner discussed options with her, as she accepts custom orders.

Turner also sells handcrafted jewelry by other Hawaii-based companies, including Josa Jewelry of Wahiawa and Sunrise Shells Hawaii LLC.

Sunrise Shells’ Brian and Kevin Emery are divers who collect their shells from the North Shore and make them into rings, pendants, earrings and 100 percent Sunrise Shell necklaces. The necklaces can sell for up to $3,000, but the line starts at $60 for a pendant.

Local and military folk making purchases with ID will receive a 10 percent kamaaina or military discount. In addition to being kamaaina, "I’m a military brat," Turner smiled.

Bikini designer Mimi Whang’s "M" brand of girls’ and women’s bikinis, many of them reversible, are carried by the shop. The suits have thin straps or ties Whang has braided out of tightly rolled, soft fabric. Keiki suits start at $35 and adult suits start at $65; Whang also welcomes custom orders.

Supersoft and breezy designs by such local companies as Honolulu-based Vermilli, Khush Clothing Inc., Molokai-based Kealopiko Inc. and more are offered at Tasi, as are other products, such as body scrubs by Pupuka, Kauai-made soap by Kopa Kauai and beachy sand-and-seashell or beach-glass-adorned picture frames by Lindsey Matthews of Oahu’s North Shore.

Not everything is made in Hawaii.

Swimwear by Haleiwa-based Mila Bikinis by the Sea LLC is available in the shop. Camila Pires’ lines are designed in Hawaii but made elsewhere.

Quick-drying leggings by Teeki of Los Angeles are neither designed nor made in Hawaii, but they are popular among Turner’s customers with active lifestyles ranging from yoga to surfing to pushing the wee one in a stroller while jogging. Feeling the fine, soft weave of the printed fabric, it is stunning to learn the garments are made from recycled plastic bottles.

You might stumble onto Tasi Boutique accidentally if you’re wandering leisurely around the North Shore community, and it might be considered a best-kept secret by repeat customers who prefer out-of-the-way spots to those crowded with tourists.

Townies have to get over the "oh, but it’s so far" mindset. Much of the drive is beautiful and restorative, as long as there’s no roadwork.

The Waialua Shopping Center is a cluster of buildings that houses The Brown Bottle, Waialua Chop Suey, Tasi Boutique and other shops on the left side, and Jerry’s Pizza, a real estate office and additional businesses on the right side. The center’s parking lot is connected to the Waialua Post Office parking area.

After shopping, one could refuel with a slice of pizza, burger, salad, pasta or sub sandwich at Jerry’s before heading townward, back into the fray.
