The ILH softball race is going into extra innings.
Mid-Pacific beat Punahou 6-0 at Mid-Pacific on Tuesday to seal the deal on a three-way tie at the end of the regular season. The Owls, Maryknoll and defending champion Kamehameha are all 11-3.
The Spartans rallied to beat Pac-Five and Kamehameha beat Sacred Hearts on Tuesday to ensure the deadlock.
"It’s so much parity this year," Punahou coach Bobby Makahilahila said. "More than I can remember."
Mid-Pacific will host Maryknoll on Thursday, with the winner taking on Kamehameha on Saturday. The winner of that game will be crowned the queens of the ILH. Should Kamehameha lose, it would play Thursday’s loser for the second spot.
Next week Punahou, ‘Iolani, Sacred Hearts, Pac-Five and the unlucky No. 3 team from the special playoff will play a tournament for the third spot.
The Owls had a lot more to play for than the Buffanblu, knowing that if they won they would be in a playoff for the league title. If they lost, they would slip back into a jumble fighting for the ILH’s third spot in the state playoffs.
So Mid-Pacific hit its home field not messing around. Jenna Kumabe led off the home half of the first with a double to center field and went to third on a single by Taylor Oda. Nicole Lopez battled back from a 1-2 count to load the bases with nobody out.
Lindsey Matoi topped a ground ball, but Punahou shortstop Katelyn Chagam rushed her throw home and it sailed over catcher Sara Buck’s head to let two runs score. Punahou pitcher Nicole Nishizaki got two quick outs before Kiley Oeda singled to center to plate another run. The Owls forced Nishizaki to throw 40 pitches in the first inning before she settled down.
"Our top of the order, whether they get hits or just hit the ball hard, they are always going to put pressure on the other team," Mid-Pacific assistant David "Boy" Eldredge said. "They did it again today. We got people on early and it puts pressure on people and gets us on a roll."
Mid-Pacific’s top three hitters, Kumabe, Oda and Lopez, were 4-for-9 and those spots scored all six of Mid-Pacific’s runs, the latter half of them on a home run in the fourth inning by Lopez, who had runners on base all four times she came to the plate.
The six runs were plenty enough for Mid-Pacific ace Kaili Akimseu, who put 65 of her 95 pitches over for strikes and allowed only one runner to reach second base after the second inning. She allowed four hits, striking out five and not yielding a walk.
MPI, which won its only three ILH titles from 2010 to ’12, won its 10th game in a row after starting 1-3.
"It’s been exciting, a fun year," Eldredge said. "It’s been a fun journey watching them improve. Akimseu is one of them I am proud of the most. She struggled in the beginning of the season and now she is confident and good things are happening for us."
