There is no stopping the Campbell softball team.
Nashlynn Anguay tripled and scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning and Campbell beat Mililani 5-2 at Campbell on Thursday.
Anguay couldn’t prevent Mililani from tying the score in the top of the inning, but made up for it with a mad dash around the bases, ignoring head coach Michael Hermosura’s stop sign. She stopped halfway between third and home but scored when the Mililani catcher bobbled the ball and it squirted free.
"I didn’t even look up until I passed him," Anguay said. "I was hoping it wasn’t really on line and I thought ‘Oh, shoot, I am out or might be stuck in a pickle.’ "
Anguay’s blast helped the Sabers avenge a 2-1 loss to Mililani earlier this year and moved Campbell (6-3) within a half game of the Trojans (7-3) in the OIA Red West.
"If we play like we can, like we did today, and limit our errors and execute our offensive work, I think we can compete with the best teams like Mililani," Hermosura said. "We are young, but these kids have all been there before and if we execute, we are going to be all right."
Mililani opted to start ace Aubree Kim despite the sophomore running a fever all week, and it cost the Trojans. Kim went into the windmill eight times, and all eight of her pitches were high and outside to put two runners on. Tristan Cozo came on and hit the first batter she faced to load the bases with no outs.
Campbell got two runs on a single to left by Kawehi Kahana, but Cozo left the bases loaded to give her team a chance.
Campbell ace Elisa Favela shut the Trojans out for five innings, though, not allowing a runner past first base.
Maya Yoshiura led off the sixth with a single for the Trojans and Karly Macadangdang lofted a long fly ball that centerfielder Anguay ranged to haul in.
Campbell’s field usually has a temporary fence set up that would have made Macadangdang’s blast an easy home run. Kristen Ishii bunted to first to move Yoshiura to second, but Campbell first baseman Caragh Morris got greedy and tried to get the lead runner. Her throw was wild, and with Anguay sneaking over to left field to back up a possible play from first to second, the ball rolled all the way to where Anguay made her catch a batter earlier and Ishii rounded all three bases to tie the score 2-2.
That’s when Campbell finally solved Cozo, with Kyra Hoohuli leading off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left and Anguay splitting the gap in left field for her triple. Abbygale Anguay, a senior role player who was in for the entire game on senior day, followed by taking a fastball off the helmet and scored Campbell’s insurance run on a single to center by Cydney Curran.
