Man turning in explosives to Maui police prompts evacuation
At about 12:55 p.m. Tuesday, Maui police evacuated the Maui County Service Center at Maui Mall in Kahului because of suspected explosive devices in one of the vehicles in the parking lot.
County spokesman Rod Antone said the incident involved no apparent malicious intent.
The incident involved a man who had found suspected explosives and was “trying to do the right thing” by delivering the devices to police, Antone said. When police dispatch found out, they told the person to stay put and officers would come to him, Antone said.
About 100 county employees and about 50 to 60 members of the public were evacuated from the service center.
The devices were said to be a mortar round and a grenade, according to media advisory issued Tuesday afternoon by Maui County. Maui police have contacted the U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit to secure the suspected explosives.
