Some mistakes are easier to live with than others.
Sean Kinel streaked home with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and No. 2 Mid-Pacific beat No. 3 Saint Louis 5-3 on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
"I think we blew the play on that," Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru said. "We were just supposed to steal second, but it turned into a run, I guess."
With runners on first and third and one out in the top of the eighth, Ryan Kotoki took off for second base on the first pitch to Jerry Lum. Saint Louis catcher Taylor Meilleur threw to second to get Kotoki, but the ball was cut off and bobbled. Kinel, who is a wide receiver on the football team, took off from third and made it to the plate just as the ball arrived but slid headfirst in the narrow gap between the ground and Meilleur’s tag.
"I didn’t know that the ball got there already until after I slid; I thought I was safe already," Kinel said. "I saw him blocking the plate and knew I had to get past him somehow, so I slid under him."
Lum followed that with a long double to right field to give Mid-Pacific another run before Brendan Uchima came on to pitch for Pono Anderson and put out the fire.
Mid-Pacific reliever Chase Wago then walked Jacob Gribbin to lead off the bottom of the eighth but forced Jordan Yamamoto to bounce into a double play and Ryder Kuhns to ground to short to get the victory.
Mid-Pacific tied the game in the top of the seventh on a double by Bryce Nagata.
Saint Louis, which rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Kuhns and a single by Devan Stubblefield, had a golden chance to end the game in the bottom of the seventh but ran itself out of the inning.
Jacob White walked to lead off the inning but was erased on a bunt back to the pitcher. White then ran for Meilleur at first, and was gunned down for the second out trying to steal second with the top of the order coming up.
"We talk about not making simple mistakes, but we missed a signal in a very, very crucial situation," Saint Louis coach George Gusman said. "That falls on me, we talked about it before we broke, but it’s one of those things where young guys get excited and see what they think they see. Good game, though."
Mid-Pacific (9-2-1) defended its spot atop the ILH and hosts ‘Iolani on Tuesday. Saint Louis (8-3) plays Pac-Five on Tuesday and ‘Iolani on Wednesday.
The Owls have won both games this year against the Crusaders, and will go for a regular-season sweep on April 15.
