Three of Kamehameha’s four wins this season have come against ‘Iolani, but the Warriors are still glad to see the regular-season series end.
"Those three games were our toughest games," Kamehameha pitcher Keenan Lum said. "They battle, they scratch and they claw and they do anything to win."
Lum went the distance in his first start and Kamehameha beat ‘Iolani 5-2 at ‘Iolani on Friday. The Warriors previously beat the Raiders 6-5 and 7-2.
Kamehameha allowed Lum, who was coming off an elbow injury, to take the mound with a lead after Cody Paiva tripled in Matt Yokota in the top of the first.
Just as Lum expected, the Raiders battled back, scoring a run in the second on an RBI single by Caleb Duhay. The Raiders took the lead in the third on an RBI double by Joshua Inaba.
Kamehameha tied it in the fourth when catcher Ethan Rosehill swatted an outside pitch high into right field and watched it carry all the way over the wall.
"I got lucky on that a little bit, but that’s what you need in baseball," Rosehill said. "I didn’t think it was gone, but lucky enough for me and the team it went over."
Rosehill struck again in the sixth with a double to left-center, chasing ‘Iolani starter Bronson Ichimura after 86 pitches. His replacement, Reid Kimura, then walked Will Young, allowed Lum to dump a single into right field and then walked Kody Cacal to force in a run. By the time he struck out Paiva looking, the Warriors led 5-2 with six outs to go.
"Give credit to the offense," Lum said. "We hit good, got runners on and executed some, and when we do that we will be all right."
Lum put down ‘Iolani’s last six batters in order, getting two ground balls, two fly balls and two strikeouts. He finished the day allowing only six hits and two walks. He erased two baserunners with quick pickoff moves to second base.
