Kauai is the fastest-growing county in Hawaii, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The island’s population rose 1.6 percent to 69,512 from 68,395 residents between July 1, 2012, and July 2013, according to the agency.
Components of the population change include international migration of 350 people. The figure reflects foreign-born residents, migration between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and the armed forces population between the U.S. and overseas.
The agency reported domestic migration of 475 people.
Maui County experienced 1.4 percent growth in the same period. Hawaii County’s population grew 1.2 percent, and Honolulu saw 0.9 percent growth.
In terms of numbers, Honolulu topped the counties with an increase of 8,439 people. Hawaii County grew by 2,246, while Maui County and Kauai County grew by 2,162 and 1,117, respectively.
Honolulu is the most populated county in the state with 983,429 residents, followed by Hawaii County with 190,821 and Maui County with 160,202 residents.
The data reported by the agency on growth are based on annual population estimates since the 2010 census through July 1, 2013, according to a news release.
Kauai is the state’s fourth-largest and oldest island. About 5 percent of Hawaii’s population live on the Garden Isle, which often is a backdrop for motion pictures including "The Descendents," "Avatar" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."
