If counting consecutive wins is too easy, maybe the Campbell pitching staff might want to start counting how many scoreless innings it has put up in a row.
Dorrien Hermosura moved to within one out of a complete-game shutout and Campbell beat host Mililani 2-0 to remain unbeaten in OIA Red West baseball on Wednesday.
Hermosura’s performance helped Campbell record its 21st straight scoreless inning, and 31st in its last 32.
Hermosura, who upped his scoreless inning streak to 122/3 with the win, was nearly untouchable against the struggling Trojans until he lost his touch in the seventh. He began the inning by striking out Stewart Okazaki and Ty Desa looking, but walked Trevor Inouye on five pitches and hung an 0-1 pitch to Jensen Kim, who blistered it up the middle for a single to bring the potential tying run to the plate.
"I wanted it bad, but I hung a curveball up the middle," Hermosura said. "It was just a loss of concentration. I couldn’t focus because my adrenaline was pumping because I just wanted the game."
Campbell coach Rory Pico then walked to the mound and gave the ball to Zachary Kapihe, who forced Justice Nakagawa to pop out to Eli Kahaawi in right field to end it.
The Sabers improved to 6-0, and have given up only five runs. Four of them came in the league opener to Mililani, but the Trojans have not scored more than three runs in a game since. Pico was well aware of the Trojans’ struggles, and hoped he could delay their impending offensive explosion for seven more innings.
"That’s always in the back of every coach’s mind," Pico said. "You can look at box scores and this and that, but all it takes is one thing here and one thing there. We know what they are capable of. We know how they can hit. It is just a matter of time for them, I think."
Mililani, which struggled last year before making a run to the state final, can beat anyone. The Trojans have already taken out Waipahu’s Dylan Sugimoto and Pearl City’s Tanner Tokunaga this year, but had no answer for Hermosura.
The lefty struck out seven batters and walked only one to move his ratio to 15-3 this year. He set down 11 straight batters between the second and sixth innings. Most of his success came after he tasted the umpire’s generous strike zone and adjusted to it.
"They have a great pitching staff," Mililani coach Mark Hirayama said. "He kept us off balance and stayed around the plate with both of his pitches, and it is hard to beat if you don’t make adjustments."
Mililani starter Trevor Inouye matched Hermosura pitch for pitch but paid for rare mistakes in the third and sixth innings. Leadoff hitter Jobe Ibana tagged him for a double to left, went to third when Inouye tried to nab him on a fielder’s choice and scored on a grounder to first base by Hermosura. Hermosura led off the sixth with a double to right and scored his insurance run on a double to left by Kapihe.
