Filming of “The Rise of B.J. Penn” has been completed and following post-production, is slated to air in the fall.
The film documents the life of the mixed martial arts champion and will include interviews with his family, other famous fighters, and hometown friends, according to a statement from ReelTime Rentals Inc. and Left Turn Productions, which are producing the special for Fox Sports in cooperation with UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship.
In a statement, producers said they were able to capture Penn’s early life as a young prodigy of the sport, his personal challenges and legacy and the impact the athlete has left on his hometown of Hilo.
Prior to fighting for the UFC, he became the first American gold medalist of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. In mixed martial arts, Penn has competed in the featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisions. As a former UFC Lightweight Champion and UFC Welterweight Champion, he is only the second fighter in UFC history to win titles in multiple weight classes.
