No. 1 Mid-Pacific unleashed two home runs and three other extra-base hits to beat No. 7 Punahou 12-4 on Saturday morning at Mid-Pacific. The two wind-aided blasts, by Cameron Igarashi and Jarrett Lum, were the first two home runs of the season for the Owls.
"It was a hitters’ park today," Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru said. "The way the wind is blowing, if you get the ball up it is going to carry. We had to come back twice today."
Mid-Pacific supplemented its rare power display with nine walks and twice had batters reach base after being hit by pitches. Five Owls pitchers allowed the Buffanblu only three walks.
Punahou struck first when leadoff hitter Beau Branton lofted the third pitch he saw into the wind and watched it sail over the 333 sign in center field.
"It was nice, but one run in the ILH doesn’t mean a thing," Punahou coach Kenny Harrison said. "We battled, but they just outbattled us at the end. Mid-Pac is relentless as far as what they do and how they do it. You have to give them credit."
Mid-Pac left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and stranded one more in the second before taking the lead in the third on a two-run home run over the center-field fence by Igarashi and a bases-loaded walk by Matt Kimura.
Punahou retook the lead in the fifth with four straight hits with two outs. Cole Cabrera started the rally with a double and came home on a single by Branton. Aaron Fong drove him home with a double to tie it, and KJ Harrison hit it off the same spot on the fence for a double and a 4-3 lead. But that advantage wouldn’t last as long as the Buffanblu’s first lead did.
Tyler Yamaguchi doubled to center with one out, and Jarrett Lum followed with a long homer to the same spot. Lum, the designated hitter, watched 10 pitches and earned two walks before finally getting a pitch to hit, and he knew what to do with it. His homer gave the Owls a 5-4 lead and they raised it to 7-4 on a triple by Cal Muramaru and a single by Nicolas Bottom before the inning ended.
"I felt it, it felt good," Lum said. "I got plenty to see before that and I was just looking for a pitch to hit and it hung a little bit, so I got good contact on the ball."
Seth Kinnel held Punahou scoreless in the top of the sixth and the Owls exploded for five more runs in the bottom to break the Buffanblu. Mid-Pacific opened the inning with two walks and two hit batters before successive singles by Muramaru, Bottom and Shackles. Punahou sent four pinch hitters up in the seventh, but the Buffanblu failed to score a run.
