FlightCar.com

The sharing economy speeds past just offering rides, to give travelers use of your car.

» What it does: Travelers looking for an inexpensive car rental can make arrangements through FlightCar, which arranges car rentals between people who are parking their vehicles at the airport and people who need to rent a car. Owner and renter never meet. FlightCar has parking lots at Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco airports.

» What’s hot: Car rentals on FlightCar start at $10 a day, depending on the year and model of the car. I searched for a possible rental for a week’s stay in San Francisco and found a coupe in the 2001-2008 age range for $15 a day, or $105 for the week, including tax, GPS and insurance. If I wanted a sport utility vehicle of the same vintage, it would cost $168 for the same dates. The cheapest rental I found on Priceline for the same dates was $46 a day, or $434 with fees and taxes. The same search on Expedia yielded a price of $271 for the week. FlightCar also offers curbside pickup and has car seats, too.

» What’s not: Keep your eye on your mileage. Ninety miles per day are included in the price, but after that you’ll pay 35 cents a mile.
