Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Tuesday nominated Circuit Judge Michael Wilson to fill an upcoming vacancy on the state Supreme Court.

Wilson would replace Associate Justice Simeon Acoba, who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 70 next month. Wilson’s nomination for a 10-year term on the court is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.

Wilson, 60, is a former state Land Board chairman and consumer advocate who has served on the bench since 2000.

"Both on and off the bench, Judge Wilson is a well-respected leader. I am confident he will serve the state with distinction as he brings a wealth of experience, having served as an attorney and Circuit Court judge," Abercrombie said in a statement.

Wilson, who graduated from Kailua High School, the University of Wisconsin and the Antioch School of Law, is Abercrombie’s third appointment to the five-member Supreme Court. Wilson was chosen from a list of potential nominees screened by the state Judicial Selection Commission.
