Alec Dinsmore scored in the 98th minute and Punahou beat Kaiser 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Boys Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park on Thursday.
With the game 1 1/2 minutes way from penalty kicks, Dinsmore received a ball in the middle of the field after it rebounded away from Kaiser junior defender Matthew Sai at the top of the box. Dinsmore took control, juked fullback Jake Niiro and toed a shot past keeper Mike Austin to end it.
"It just came to me and I heard coach Oth (Souk Ngonethong) talking a lot like ‘just take a toby,’ so I just hit it with my toe, man. It’s not about me, it’s all about (my teammates)," Dinsmore said.
Kaiser’s defense was spectacular to that point, turning back breakaway after breakaway, with Austin coming up with 11 saves to six for Punahou’s Henry Engel. But the one he couldn’t stop ended it for the OIA champs and put Punahou in the semifinals for the second straight year.
"I was worried because they are a very physical team and very fast," Punahou coach David Trifonovitch said. "I was very fortunate, though, because they seemed to be a little out of shape. They ran out of gas and everybody started to walk and that opened up the midfield for us."

The game couldn’t have been more even, with both teams unleashing 21 shots and Kaiser being whistled for 17 fouls to Punahou’s 16. Kaiser players were given four yellow cards to Punahou’s two. The ending was reminiscent of Punahou’s quarterfinal loss to Kalani two years ago, when Leo Klink ended their season with a late goal while everyone seemed to be waiting for penalty kicks. This time the Buffanblu came out on the right end.
"We really thought we had this one," Kaiser coach Marco Antonio Gloria said. "I know that if it went to PKs we would have got it, but the stars weren’t aligned for us tonight. We win like sportsmen and we lose like sportsmen."
Punahou, which was in last year’s state final, moves on to play Baldwin in the semifinals on Friday. Dinsmore, who had 11 goals this season for the Buffanblu, broke a three-match scoreless streak with his heroics.
"He’s been one of our top scorers all year," Trifonovitch said. "He has just been in a little slump the last couple of games but that’s OK, when he puts this one away we’ll take it."

KAMEHAMEHA-MAUI 3, KEALAKEHE 1
Sophomore forward Brennan Joaquin scored the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute and the Warriors beat the Waveriders in a battle of unbeatens.
Kamehameha-Maui’s Kailoa Akoi took a free kick in the 67th minute in the middle of the field about 25 yards out and chipped the ball into the middle of the box, where Kamehameha-Maui’s Daniel Quenga got a foot. Kealakehe (14-1-1) keeper Greyson Moore laid out and saved the shot in front of the post with one hand. Joaquin, who was still groggy from a spill in the box moments earlier, headed the rebound into the empty net.
"It was fun but it kinda hurt after," Joaquin said. "The ball was like moving side-to-side (on the header) and I was like ‘which … oh, I’ve got it.’ He did all of the work, I was just there to clean it up."
Chandler Alo scored another goal for Kamehameha-Maui in the 74th minute.
"The one thing I know about these boys is once we get it into gear and get it into the offensive half, they have played so long together they know what to do," Kamehameha-Maui coach Kimo Correa said.
Goal scorers-KSM: Colton Cabanas (11:35), Brennan Joaquin (66:21), Chandler Alo (73:27). Kea: Joshua Lopez (7:51).
BALDWIN 2, KAPOLEI 1, PKS
The Bears made all five of their penalty kicks to the Hurricanes’ four and put a second Maui team in the semifinals.
Baldwin, which had been booted by Kapolei twice in the past three years, got successful kicks from Jaren Otani, Nicholas Lawrence, Matthew Foronda, Derek Hight and Jorge Perez-Martin. Shay Akau, Marcelo Dadino and Lyric Deleon converted for Kapolei but Aldo Ramirez-Hernandez saw his attempt go wide on the Hurricanes’ second try.
"It was good to be on the other side," Baldwin coach Kane Palazzoto said. "It’s definitely good to know how it feels to win one, you know?"
Kapolei got on the board first when Akau threw the ball directly in front of the goal and 5-foot-7 CJ Harvey headed it past Baldwin keeper Benjamin Wuthrich in the 12th minute. The Hurricanes weathered a Baldwin assault — including four straight corner kicks — for the rest of the half. Kapolei’s stout defense didn’t hold up after the break, though.
"We’ve been a second-half team all year," Palazzoto said. "This team is battle tested, they will never give up and that’s what I love about them."
Kapolei was issued a red card when Harvey got caught up in a scrum in front of the Kapolei bench in the 54th minute. Kapolei coach Ryan Lau said the card was for a retaliation that nobody saw clearly. The referees report cited violent contact.
Foronda scored three minutes later on a header off a corner kick to tie the score.
Goal scorers—Kap: CJ Harvey (11:19). Bald: Matthew Foronda (57:23).

‘Iolani keeper Josh Adachi made one penalty kick and stopped two more as the Raiders outlasted the Falcons 4-1 in penalty kicks.
Ryan Abe broke the ice for Kalani in the 30th minute, blasting a steamer into the net after the Falcons repeatedly took point-blank shots at Adachi and the ‘Iolani defense.
The Raiders battled back to score two minutes after halftime when Max Ching got deep into the corner and earned a corner kick. Spencer Ho served a ball about three feet off the ground into the middle of the box.
Senior fullback Aaron Yanagi took off and flew head-first through the middle of the box and got his head on the pass to beat Kalani keeper Michael Stafford to equalize it and give the top seed new life.
