"The girls are very excited. They knew they had to work hard to get there," HPA coach Stephen Perry said. "We haven’t talked about the championship at all, but we will tonight."
Sophomore forward Marlie Mandaquit started things for Hawaii Prep in the 17th minute, working the ball into the corner before reversing her field against Pac-Five fullback Tasi Reid and blasting a ball over the keeper’s head from just outside the box. Mandaquit struck again eight minutes later with a cross over the keeper’s head from the other corner that led to an easy tap-in by Nanea Tavares. Bri Vallente added another goal before halftime, and Tavares added her second in the 61st minute. Emma Taylor polished it off with a goal in the 79th minute.
Hawaii Prep has outscored opponents 13-0 in its two tournament games.
"We’ve got some weapons up top," Perry said. "Once they got going, the floodgates kind of opened. (Vallente) and (Tavares) are two dangerous people, and if we keep feeding them, good things are going to happen."
Goal scorers: Hawaii Prep–Marlie Mandaquit (16:25), Nanea Tavares (24:05, 60:33), Bri Vallente (34:00), Emma Taylor (79:57).
Mid-Pacific 2, Kamehameha-Hawaii 1, OT
Mid-Pacific’s Kaimiokanani Yoza and Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Shayla Iwata collided just inside the penalty box in front of the Warriors’ goal in overtime and the referee called a foul on Iwata to set up a penalty kick.
Janaye Shepherd then converted to send Mid-Pacific to its fourth straight state championship match.
"She was aggressive to the ball," Mid-Pacific coach Dave Pai said. "That was something we were missing the whole game. I think they did much better than we did, and if we could have settled down a little bit we could have done better. The effort was there."
Mid-Pacific broke the ice when it earned a free kick just outside the box in the 47th minute, and Shepherd served up a ball that Kayla Watanabe got just enough of to tip off the keeper’s hands and into the goal. Kamehameha-Hawaii responded six minutes later when JC Kerr split two defenders with a pass to Harper Hottendorf, who beat keeper Sarah Poppinga with a shot that nestled itself inside the far post.
The Owls pressed the action in the first half, outshooting the Warriors 8-4, with Watanabe taking half of Mid-Pacific’s shots. Poppinga was forced to make only one save and spent the majority of the first 40 minutes with her hands on her hips.
"The girls worked really hard and I am very proud of them," Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Sonya Ah Chong said. "It is a hard way to lose."
Goal scorers: KS-Hawaii–Harper Hottendorf (52:00). Mid-Pacific–Kayla Watanabe (46:48), Janaye Shepherd (86:07).
