The boys who make up the Moanalua basketball team might not realize it, but the shot clocks above each basket at their gym are turned off for high school games.
Na Menehune blitzed Kapolei in the first round of the OIA tournament on Wednesday, beating the Hurricanes 58-36 to keep their season alive. Kapolei finishes its campaign at 6-12 a year after making the state tournament.
Moanalua forced turnovers on five of Kapolei’s first six possessions and ran out to a 10-0 lead. Na Menehune were never threatened after that, building the margin to 19 points after just eight minutes. Kapolei outscored Moanalua 26-21 in the second half, but the outcome was never in doubt.
"These kids love to run," Moanalua coach Byron Mello said. "They love to get up and down, and I told them if we can play tough defense and our defense generates offense for us and we don’t have to run any sets, I am more than fine with that."
Moanalua forced 10 turnovers in the first quarter and scored seven of its 11 baskets in the quarter in transition. Kapolei finished with 20 turnovers after settling down in the second half.
Jamaal Willis led Na Menehune with 14 points, half of them in the first quarter. Aaron Stuart contributed 13 and Karson Cruz chipped in 10. Benjahmin Toomalatai led Kapolei with eight points.
Na Menehune move on to play West runner-up Mililani at Mililani today. Moanalua beat Mililani once this season, but that was way back on Nov. 26, when they blew out the Trojans 67-52.
"This undoubtedly helps us," Mello said. "I am proud of my team. We knew we had to take care of business tonight or our season is done and our kids responded."
