If you haven’t come up with a plan for Valentine’s Day, it’s time to act — whether it’s making that restaurant reservation, calling the florist or cleaning house to set the stage for romance. Not everyone is focused on material expressions of love, but a token of affection is always welcome. Hearts and florals abound this time of year. Here are a few places to start.
At the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on the Big Island, the Seaside Luxe boutique has partnered with luxury candy brand Sugarfina to create custom Kimberly McDonald bento boxes ($75) for Valentine’s Day. The candy box features eight of the jewelry designer’s favorite sweets — including three different kinds of caramels, cocoa almonds, peppermint malt balls and marzipan "lemon cake" candies — all packaged in her signature geode-patterned box. Forever 21’s Valentine’s Day collection is loaded with items from sweet dresses to lingerie, including retro-inspired polka-dot knits, loose-fitting graphic tees, lounge shorts and flirty babydoll dresses. Not everyone shares the same romantic views on Valentine’s Day, so while one shirt reads "Taken," another implores "Go Away." And some proudly celebrate "Single" status.
The cosmetics company LUSH is using Valentine’s Day as an occasion to show solidarity with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and activists who have been under attack in Russia, host of the Sochi Winter Olympics that open today.
LUSH is urging folks to draw a "sign of love" triangle on their body in pink lipstick and then post "selfies" to their social media networks using the hashtag #signoflove. Shoppers can also head to LUSH stores at Ala Moana Center and elsewhere to take pictures with the #signoflove triangle, a global symbol of gay rights.
LUSH is gathering #signoflove images electronically and in stores to create a petition book of images of people who "believe love is an essential human right." On Feb. 14, LUSH staff will take the book to Russian embassies in Washington, D.C., and Ottawa, Canada, as well as Russian consulate offices in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, Toronto and Montreal.
Closer to home, spread love with LUSH gift items ranging from massage bars to Neon Love soap that contains rosewood oil, figs and passion fruit juice, or a Love Locket Bath Bomb ($12.95), which "unlocks" to reveal a hidden heart inside.
Treat your loved one to a sweet treatment at Na Ho‘ola Spa, which is offering its rose-scented 50-minute Lokelani Sugar Scrub for $145. The scrub also contains kukui, macadamia and coconut oils to condition and moisturize skin.
The spa is in the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. Call 237-6330 or email nahoolaspa@hyatt.com.
Gucci’s medium top-handle flap bag in heart-printed leather is $1,350, part of its Heartbeat print collection of Cruise 2014 accessories that are in stores now. Other accessories include a key case pouch, $240, and several wallets, at about $540.
Tory Burch is offering a number of Printed Heart small leather goods for Valentine’s Day, including this smartphone wristlet, for about $125. Other items available include small jewelry cases, coin purses, cosmetic cases and Tilsim heart stud earrings ($68) in French Red, with the Tory Burch logo in gold.
