Pig-hunting season to open for Kokee-Waimea

COURTESY U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
Feral pigs are found on all but two of the Hawaiian Islands: Kahoolawe and Lanai. The Big Island supports the largest and densest population of the entire archipelago

Feral pig hunting season in the Kokee-Waimea Canyon area during weekends and state holidays will start Feb. 1.

The season in Hunting Unit A, which consists of portions of Puu Ka Pele Forest and portions of Kekaha game management area, will end June 29.

Hawaii residents interested in hunting feral pig in Hunting Unit A are required to acquire a permit from the Kauai office of the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife office.

Hunters may pick up their permits in the Lihue office at 3060 Eiwa St., room 306. Hunters must present their 2013-2014 Hawaii hunting license when obtaining their permit. Another person may pick up a permit but must present the license of the hunter applying.

Hunters must sign in and sign out at either the Kokee or Kekaha hunter checking stations for each day of hunting. The use of hunting dogs will not be permitted in hunting Unit A. The bag limit will be one pig per hunter per day.

Portions of the same area will also open to archers only for feral pig hunting on these days. No hunting permit will be required for this area, but each hunter must sign in and sign out at the Kokee hunter checking station. Only legal archery equipment may be used. The use of hunting dogs will not be permitted. The bag limit will be one pig per hunter per day.

Further information may be obtained by contacting the land office in Lihue at (808) 274-3433.
