A hiker was airlifted to safety in Iao Valley, Maui, early today.

Maui rescue crews Saturday evacuated a hiker who had fallen 40 or 50 feet off the trail in Iao Valley.

The San Diego man, 57, had managed to crawl back up 15 feet before he realized he was in trouble, the Maui Fire Department said by email.

Two visitors hiking in the area heard his calls for help and alerted authorities. The alarm came in at 9:12 a.m.

Firefighters hiked in about three-fourths of a mile and found the man 25 feet down the side of a cliff, out of sight but within earshot, fire officials said.

The Air 1 helicopter lifted him out to the trail and crews escorted him back to the parking lot where he was checked by medics. He drove himself to Maui Memorial Medical Center with minor cuts to his face and pain in his ribs.
