There was little breathing room in the snug confines of Roosevelt’s gym, but the Farrington Governors found a way.
Isaiah Visoria scored 15 points and Jacob McEnroe added 12 as No. 4 Farrington (14-3) improved to 4-0 in the OIA East with a 61-49 win over the fast-rising Rough Riders. Roosevelt (4-9, 2-2 OIA) had won its previous two games against Top 10 teams — McKinley and Kalaheo — and was in prime position to knock out the visitors with a late comeback.
"They’re a very good team. They’re very scrappy," Farrington coach Allan Silva said. "We played together in crunch time when (Roosevelt) was coming back. They took control."
Roosevelt’s upset hopes dissipated in the final 3 minutes despite a major rally that cut the lead from 17 points to 5.
"You know what, we walked out with our heads up," Roosevelt coach Steve Hathaway said. "We played one of the top four, five teams in the state, the best team in the OIA. We just didn’t make shots down late and we had to foul."
He pointed to some clutch 3-point shooting, including two treys by Van Hugo, as one of the difference-makers.
"We had some mental breakdowns, giving up three 3s that were wide open. Hugo’s too good to leave alone. And that 3 (by Mark Duldulao) at the end of the half. But we made them earn it. I like what my team’s doing. We’re getting better."
Farrington had a commanding 37-20 lead early in the third quarter after Isaiah Smith (five points, five steals) picked the ball from a Rough Rider and fed Visoria for an easy layup.
But the home team chiseled away and got the margin down to 11 entering the final quarter. Roosevelt then took advantage of some erratic Farrington shooting.
Down 51-36, the Rough Riders went on a 13-3 run. Mick Colling (18 points) scored on a backdoor layup, a foul-line jumper and a pair of free throws to bring the Rough Riders within 54-49 with 2:46 remaining.
Farrington then closed it out with the final seven points of the game. Smith made three of four foul shots and Visoria found Seu Luafatasaga for a layup to ice the win.
It was a surreal night for Visoria, who played for Roosevelt since his freshman year before transferring in the offseason. His family moved from Makiki to Kalihi a few years back.
"It felt different. There’s like no air in the gym. I couldn’t even breathe. And the crowd got into it," said Visoria, who added three assists, three blocks and five steals. "I expected a close game. I wanted it to be a close game."
Though big Mason Semisi was a force in the post (eight points), the Governors’ high-scoring offense never got completely untracked against Roosevelt’s zone defense. With 3:09 left in the first half, Silva opted to play his cards and had his guards hold the ball at midcourt with a 27-18 lead.
"I wanted to draw them out of their defense. I wanted us to drive to the hole," Silva said.
The move paid off. Duldalao hit a corner 3 with eight seconds left in the half, giving the Govs their biggest lead, 30-18, at the break.
"We’ve got to work on rebounding and defense," Silva said. "Big time. They were driving on us too much."
