Take Flight
Teens and young adults interested in aviation are invited to participate in Island Air’s Explorers Program.
The 10-week program offers participants ages 14 to 20 an opportunity to learn about a variety of aviation-related careers, from pilot and flight attendant to aircraft mechanic, airport operations and customer relations.
The program includes visits to airport facilities, including the air traffic control tower and aircraft maintenance facilities, and an optional observational flight.
Island Air’s program started in 2009 and has been offered five times. Of its 76 graduates, several have gone on to pursue certification as pilots and worked as interns at Island Air.
The program costs $70 and is limited to 15 students. An application, which requires prospective participants to explain their interest in aviation and their qualifications, can be downloaded from Island Air’s website at www.islandair.com/explorers.
The application must be turned in at an orientation program on 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Museum, Atherton Halau. Information about the program is also available at www.facebook.com/islandairexplorers.
