If No. 4 Farrington is going to be challenged by an OIA team, it won’t come from the White Conference.
The Governors scored on each of their first seven possessions and took it from there in a 57-46 win over visiting Kaiser on Wednesday night.
Kaiser, which entered the game the lone unbeaten team in the White, was without starting point guard Kelsey Lewis because of an injured quad and the Cougars sorely missed him. Farrington attacked the weak spot immediately and forced 11 turnovers in the first half while committing only five.
“We kept the same game plan whether he was in or not,” Farrington coach Allan Silva said. “He might have scored an extra five points for them, but we would have played the same way no matter who is on the court.”
Van Hugo led the Governors with 10 points in the first half, but everybody got into the act with seven different players scoring for Farrington in the first quarter alone. Hugo led Farrington with 17 points in the game, and 10 different players scored at least once.
Chance Kalaugher led Kaiser with 22 points, 18 of them in the second half. He scored every one of Kaiser’s points in the third quarter.
Farrington lost five times in the preseason, but went 7-0 against teams from its own league.
“Farrington is a good basketball team,” Kaiser coach Branden Kawazoe said. “The press took us out of what we wanted to do a little bit. We missed our point guard, but you have to give them credit, that’s a fast and athletic team.”
The Governors closed the first quarter up by 14 points and grew it to 16 by halftime before running it as high as 23 with 3:21 left.
Then Kaiser made a run at Farrington’s reserves, dropping it to 13 with 1:05 left on six points from Kalaugher and a 3-pointer by Micah Okamoto. Farrington went 16-for-35 from the free-throw line in the game to Kaiser’s 8-for-22, and missed half of its attempts down the stretch. Okamoto beat the final buzzer with an off-balance 3-pointer to close the margin to a respectable 11.“The reserves kind of redeemed themselves,” Silva said. “But everybody will be shooting free throws tomorrow. We have never missed so many free throws in a game.”
