A car that plunged down a cliff on Maui’s rural northwest coastline Saturday matches the description of a convertible belonging to a Wailea woman missing for more than two weeks.

Maui fire rescue crews Saturday recovered the body of a woman from a white BMW convertible that was found more than 100 feet down a cliff near mile-marker 10 along Kahekili Highway, an area known for its winding and narrow roadway.

Maui police late last month asked for the public’s help in locating Jean Kini Chang, 59, who was last seen at her South Maui home Dec. 18.

In a missing-person alert, police said Chang, who may be suffering from an illness requiring medical attention, might be driving her white 2005 BMW Z-4 sport coupe convertible.

Maui police officials did not immediately respond to messages Sunday afternoon asking whether the crashed car has been linked to Chang.

Fire crews responded to the scene Saturday afternoon and found a woman with fatal injuries inside the vehicle. 

A Maui Fire Department helicopter was used to reach the area because it was not accessible from the highway.

It is unclear how the car went over the cliff.

Chang was described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds, with blond medium-length hair and green eyes.
