Anyone seeking to set off firecrackers on Oahu has until 4:30 p.m. today to purchase permits from satellite city halls in order to legally buy them from licensed retailers for the coming New Year’s Eve celebration.

The city’s fireworks ordinance requires that permits be obtained no less than 10 days before they are used and because satellite city halls are closed on Saturdays, today is the last day they will be available for New Year’s revelers. The permits are no longer issued at Oahu fire stations.

Permits cost $25 each, and each permit allows the applicant to purchase up to 5,000 firecrackers from licensed retailers. There is no limit on the number of permits an individual can purchase. Only people 18 and older can purchase the permits or the firecrackers.

Firecrackers can only be purchased from 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 26 to midnight on Dec. 31 for the New Year’s period.

Only firecrackers can be purchased with the permits. Other types of fireworks, including paperless firecrackers, fountains and sparklers are outlawed on Oahu.

Firecrackers can only be set off during a four-hour period: from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.

The city sold 8,564 permits in 2012. As of Monday this year, 3,205 permits had been issued, city officials said.
