Gant goes out in style for UH
In his final appearance at Aloha Stadium, Chris Gant ended his career by posting his fifth game of the season with more than 100 receiving yards, 21 coming on a momentum-shifting reception after Army rallied to tie the game in the third quarter.
Army had scored 21 unanswered points to knot the game at 28-28 with 6:17 left in the period. UH opened its next drive with Sean Schroeder looking for Gant on a slant for a 21-yard gain that sparked a five-play go-ahead scoring drive.
"I knew if I was going to have a chance to catch the ball, I was going to try to make something special happen and get everybody back on track," Gant said.
Schroeder targeted Gant nine times for a game-high eight receptions and 116 yards. Six of his grabs went for first downs. He ended his senior season with a team-best 973 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. But his focus wasn’t on his personal achievements, during or after the game.
"It wasn’t my night. I didn’t care about me or it being my senior night. I just cared about my teammates and I cared about Willis Wilson," Gant said.
Army attack held in check
Army finished with 254 yards rushing against Hawaii, which is usually a banner day for most teams.
For the Black Knights, it was 76 yards less than their season average.
Army entered the game leading the country in rushing at 330.6 yards per game, but was held to its lowest total of the season, which includes games against Stanford and Boston College.
The Black Knights were without two of their top rushers. Fullback Larry Dixon, second on the team with 672 rushing yards, missed the game with an arm injury suffered three weeks ago against Western Kentucky, Army’s previous game.
Fullback Hayden Tippett, one of 12 finalists for the 2013 Wuerffel Trophy, given to the player who best combines exemplary community service with outstanding academics and athletic achievements, missed his fifth straight game with an ankle injury.
Junior Tony Giovannelli made his second start of the season at running back and had 52 yards on seven carries.
Only 2 winless FBS teams left
There were four winless Football Bowl Subdivision teams coming into the week. After Hawaii’s 49-42 defeat of Army on Saturday night, that left two.
Southern Miss also got off the winless wagon with a 62-27 defeat at UAB on Saturday.
The last O-fer teams are Miami (Ohio) of the Mid-American Conference and Georgia State of the Sun Belt Conference. Both teams concluded their seasons at 0-12.
Third quarter, penalties remain problems for UH
As it has nearly all season, the third quarter proved problematic for Hawaii.
Going into Saturday’s game, UH was outscored 121-32 in the third quarter, and never scored more than an opponent all season in the stanza following the halftime break.
That trend continued in the season finale against Army, as the Black Knights scored three consecutive touchdowns in the first 8 minutes, 43 seconds of the third period to tie the game at 28.
Army was aided by 11 Hawaii penalties for 127 yards — a season high for UH. That included one personal foul and one unsportsmanlike conduct on one play late in the third quarter that resulted in 30 yards.
They were assessed against linebacker Brenden Daley and defensive lineman Kennedy Tulimasealii and set up the Black Knights’ final TD early in the fourth quarter, after the Rainbow Warriors had regained momentum and the lead, 42-28.
