HPU’s McKenna named newcomer and runner of year in cross country
Hawaii Pacific junior Fiona McKenna was named the PacWest newcomer and runner of the year after winning the title in Saturday’s conference championship race in Novato, Calif.
McKenna was timed in 17 minutes and 16 seconds on the 5-kilometer course, 27 seconds ahead of Azusa Pacific’s Kristie Sikma. APU won the team title, with HPU second.
Her top-five finish earned McKenna All-PacWest first-team honors. She was joined on the first team by teammate Jamie Neal (seventh, 18:08).
The Sea Warriors also had two runners on the second team in sophomore Marissa Kunsch (eighth, 18:21) and freshman Malia Gonzales (ninth, 18:22). Joining them was Brigham Young-Hawaii freshman Kami Dixon (14th, 18:33).
HPU sophomore Evelina Maanson was named to the third team after finishing 20th in 18:41.
MORE CROSS COUNTRY
Two earn first-team selections: Based on their top-seven finishes at Saturday’s conference championship in Novato, Calif., Hawaii Pacific junior Leandro Santillan and junior Kevin Miller of Brigham Young-Hawaii were named to the All-PacWest first team.
Santillan was third overall, finishing the 8K course in 26 minutes, 45.4 seconds. He was 45 seconds behind winner Bryton Reim of team champion California Baptist, helping the Sea Warriors to second place.
Miller was fifth in 26:53.7.
Named to the second team, based on finishing eighth to 14th, were Chaminade junior Jorge Cisneros (12th, 27:36.8) and HPU junior Fermin Murillo-Villangran (13th, 27:41.1).
Third-team honors, based on finishing 15th to 21st, went to HPU junior Yeltsin Vasquez (15th, 27:41.7); BYUH freshman Tanner Smith (19th, 27:45.7) and HPU senior Tony Perez (20th, 27:47.2).
BASKETBALL
Chaminade hosts conference challenge: Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon face PacWest teams Hawaii Hilo and Chaminade in this week’s PacWest-GNAC Challenge at McCabe Gym.
The Vulcans and Saints open the men’s basketball tournament at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by the game between the Wolves and the host Silverswords.
Saturday’s play has Hawaii Hilo against Western Oregon at 5 p.m., with the Saint Martin’s-Chaminade contest to follow.
At Cannon Activities Center, Brigham Young-Hawaii hosts its Asia Pacific Tournament beginning tonight. The Seasiders alumni take on the Tahiti All-Stars at 7 p.m.
Play continues through Thursday with single games at 7:30 p.m. Tahiti plays Hawaii Select on Wednesday and the BYU-Hawaii varsity Thursday.
Former Sea Warrior playing in Scotland: Fran Urli, the former forward for Hawaii Pacific, is playing for the Glasgow (Scotland) Rocks in the British Basketball League. In his first five games, Urli, a Croatian national who played just one season for HPU (2011-12), has averaged 9.8 points 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. He has shot 62.5 percent from the floor.
VOLLEYBALL
No. 4 Seasiders take win streak on road: Brigham Young-Hawaii (20-1, 15-1 PWC) takes its 13-match win streak and hopes of repeating as conference champion on the road this week with critical matches against three of the four teams that have a mathematical chance of catching the Seasiders in the standings.
BYUH, which remained at No. 4 in Monday’s AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll, plays three matches in as many days — Thursday against fifth-place Azusa Pacific (17-7, 9-5), Friday against Cal Baptist (16-8, 13-3) and Saturday versus Point Loma (20-6, 13-3). Azusa and Cal Baptist are tied for second.
The Seasiders, who advanced to the NCAA D-II national semifinals last year, close out the regular season at home against Hawaii Pacific on Nov. 21. HPU (16-8, 10-6) is the only team to have defeated BYUH, doing so on in five sets at home Sept. 26.
SOCCER
Chan helps APU women to title: Azusa Pacific’s Logan Chan, a junior defender out of Sacred Hearts, helped the Cougars clinch its first PacWest championship last week. APU (12-1-1, 10-0-1) edged defending PacWest champion Cal Baptist
1-0 on Saturday, the Cougars’ 10th shutout of the season.
HPU hosts development camps: The Hawaii Pacific men’s team is hosting its College Individual Development Camps, Feb. 22-23, at Atherton Field on HPU’s Hawaii Loa Campus. The camps run from 10 a.m. through 1 p.m. and include collegiate training methods, strength and conditioning tips and a seminar about college recruiting and admissions processes.
