28 people left homeless as fire damages 2 Kahuku structures
Twenty-eight people were displaced Wednesday after fire heavily damaged a house in Kahuku and spread to the structure next door.
The first fire was reported at 10:01 a.m. at a two-story home at 56-377 Leleuli St.
Capt. Terry Seelig, fire department spokesman, said damage to the house was estimated at $430,000 and $60,000 to its contents.
Three families lived in the home and the Red Cross was assisting the 18 residents, Seelig said.
The fire spread to the neighboring house at 56-381 Leleuli St., where 10 people lived. That home had $20,000 damage, he said.
No one was injured in the fires and the causes are being investigated.
Both fires were under control by 11:10 a.m.
Woman standing on sidewalk killed after car, truck collide
A 63-year-old woman was killed Wednesday morning in Aiea as she stood on the sidewalk in front of Macy’s department store at Pearlridge Center and was run over by a car.
Police Lt. Robert Towne said that two cars traveling west on Moanalua Road collided at 6:10 a.m. at the intersection with Kaonohi Street.
One of the cars, a Toyota Corolla driven by a 77-year-old man, hit a Ford Ranger truck driven by a 54-year-old man.
The driver of the Corolla then drove onto the sidewalk, striking the woman.
She was taken in critical condition to Pali Momi Medical Center, where she died. The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries. He refused treatment.
