The state is opening a pathway and exercise park along Diamond Head’s exterior slope.

The Fort Ruger Pathway offers residents and visitors a way to walk, run or cycle along the mauka side of Diamond Head — or the side of the iconic Oahu landmark that faces the mountains.

Before, there was either no sidewalk along Diamond Head Road or only a narrow pedestrian walkway.

The exercise park features a pull-up bar and other fitness equipment. It’s being named after Bryan Clay, an Olympic decathlon gold medalist from Hawaii.

The Bryan Clay Exercise Park is a gift from fitness entrepreneur Clark Hatch and the Diamond Head State Monument Foundation.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie and other state officials dedicated the pathway and park on Monday.
