OIA Red football playoffs begin this weekend
A rare first-round playoff game is a good omen for the Leilehua football team.
The Mules, who struggled to fifth place in the OIA West, open the league’s Red Conference playoffs on the road at Moanalua on Friday at 7 p.m.
The last time Leilehua played in the first round of the tournament was 2007, when quarterback Andrew Manley came up from the JV and not only led Leilehua to the OIA title, he helped them earn a state championship.
A team has not come out of the opening round to reach the semifinals since.
The winner of the Leilehua-Moanalua clash takes on Mililani in the quarterfinals. Castle visits Waianae on Saturday to vie for the right to play Kahuku.
Farrington has the top seed on the other side of the bracket and will play Saturday’s winner when Kailua visits Kapolei. Waipahu and McKinley tangle at Roosevelt on Friday, with the winner playing Campbell.
The semifinals are scheduled for Oct. 25 at Aloha Stadium with the championship Nov. 1 and the third-place game for a state berth on Nov. 2.
Kahuku, Mililani top seeds in OIA volleyball
Kahuku is the top seed from the East and Mililani has the West’s top spot in the OIA Red volleyball playoffs, which begin Wednesday.
The top two seeds from each division don’t play until Thursday in the double-elimination affair.
Wednesday’s first-round pairings are Aiea vs. Kalani and Farrington vs. Waianae — both at Farrington — and Castle vs. Pearl City at Leilehua before Kaiser plays the Mules.
Moanalua is the second seed in the East and Kapolei is the second seed in the West.
Roosevelt and Nanakuli are the top seeds in the OIA White tournament, which begins Thursday with Radford vs. Kaimuki and Waipahu vs. Kalaheo at Kalaheo.
