No. 3 Kahuku needed less than an hour to turn the OIA’s most anticipated volleyball match into a rout.
The Red Raiders put a damper on Moanalua’s senior night with a 25-15, 25-16 victory on Thursday.
Kahuku remains undefeated with a 10-0 conference record and earned the OIA Red East’s top playoff spot. Adora Anae recorded a match-high 10 kills, followed by Sinamoni Tonga with six kills and 15 digs.
Moanalua (9-1) had not dropped a set in the OIA.
"We’re not quite at their level yet. Athletically they’re jumping over us," Moanalua coach Tommy Lake said. "Sina hits the ball really hard, so it’s a little different. Adora’s high, so it’s like you pick your poison with those two."
Na Menehune struggled with their serve receive in Set 1, and fell behind once Anae took off.
Anae hammered a sharp angle shot past a Moanalua defender’s head to give Kahuku a 6-3 lead.
The Red Raiders went on a 10-2 scoring run with Mariah Berard-Kamakeeaina’s effective slides from setter Rachel Blake, who finished the match with 16 assists.
Moanalua used both timeouts by the time Kahuku took a 12-4 lead. Na Menehune’s shorter blockers couldn’t slow down Kahuku, which hit .486 in the set with no errors.
The Red Raiders committed five service errors in Set 1, but it was Moanalua’s first service error that gave Kahuku set point. Right-side Talia Brown put away a deep angle shot to end it.
Set 2 was much of the same, with Moanalua having no answer for Kahuku’s balance. The Red Raiders held an 11-6 lead with kills from four different players.
Anae put away her 10th kill and followed up with an ace off the tape, extending Kahuku’s lead to 18-10, and the Red Raiders coasted in.
Moanalua senior Marina Adolpho put down a kill and an ace during Kahuku’s match point, but floated her serve long to end the game.
Adolpho and Silerolia Gaogao led Na Menehune with four kills apiece. Shaylah Kagehiro added 10 assists and nine digs.
"I feel relief," Tonga said. "They’re such a good team, they’re really good on defense. I think they were our biggest competition."
With OIA playoffs on the horizon, Kahuku coach Tehani Fiatoa said the Red Raiders will have to focus on the basics.
"I feel like it’s a good time for us to relearn the skills and polish, polish, polish our technique," she said. "We need to just keep on getting better so that’s what we’re gonna keep doing."
