A 48-year-old homeless man, awaiting trial in the fatal stabbing of another homeless man at a Kailua park on July 12, hanged himself Saturday at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
It was the sixth death this year at an Oahu prison from other-than-natural causes, and it was the fifth suicide. An OCCC inmate was beaten to death by another inmate in March.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said Brian T. Kim died of asphyxia due to hanging and ruled the death a suicide.
Kim also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, another significant condition, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Kim pleaded not guilty Aug. 5 to second-degree murder in the death of Robert Coleman Jr. at Kailua District Park. His trial was scheduled for the week of Oct. 7.
Department of Public Safety officials said he was alone when he was found dead in his cell in Module 1, reserved for mentally ill inmates, but was not on suicide watch.
Public Safety Director Ted Sakai said in an email to Sen. Will Espero that Kim was found at about 5:30 p.m. and that OCCC staff immediately made efforts to revive him.
A corrections officer reported that she spoke to him during dinnertime, about an hour and a half to two hours earlier.
The staff thought he was asleep when he was found, Sakai wrote.
Emergency Medical Services personnel were immediately called but he died shortly thereafter.
Mental health staff, who visit the module five days a week, visited Kim on Friday.
When he was admitted to OCCC July 15, Kim said he was unemployed and homeless, Sakai said in the email.
The inmates in Module 1 are checked hourly, Sakai wrote.
