Stars lining up for Pacific Links

The top three on the Champions Tour money list are among those who have committed to play the Pacific Links Hawai‘i Championship, Sept. 20-22 at Kapolei Golf Club.

The tour started in Hawaii in January, with John Cook winning a playoff with David Frost to capture the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. It is in Canada for the Montreal Championship this week, then takes two weeks off before its final six stops.

So far, 17 of this year’s winners have committed to Kapolei, including Kenny Perry, Bernhard Langer and Frost, who are 1-2-3 on the money list. Former Hawaiian Open champions Jeff Sluman, Cook and Brad Faxon and are also coming over, along with Craig Stadler, Russ Cochran and tour rookies Rocco Mediate and Esteban Toledo.

Mediate won his senior debut in February and captured his second title last week in Calgary, finishing seven ahead of the field with a 22-under-par 191 that equaled the tour record for lowest score. Bill Glasson, who finished second to Willie Wood at Kapolei last year, fired a course-record 62 in Sunday’s final round.

Isao Aoki, whose 72nd-hole eagle won the 1983 Hawaiian Open, has also committed, along with former Kailua resident Scott Simpson, Sandy Lyle and Fred Funk.

Tickets are on sale. Prices range from $10 (pre-sale for Wednesday-Thursday Pro-Ams) to $40 for a Tournament Pass. Call 738-9200 for tickets and to volunteer.

The Golf Channel will broadcast all three rounds.

Mayor’s Cup set for weekend

The Mayor’s Cup tees off at 6:15 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Ala Wai. There are five flights — Championship, Seniors (55-older), A, B and C.

Jared Sawada, who has won four tournaments since May, including the Manoa Cup, leads the Championship Flight. Todd Rego, PJ Samiere, Donny Hopoi, Kyle Suppa, Matt Ma, Cory Oride and Brandan Kop are also in.

Rudy Cabalar is not defending his title after beating Sawada by eight last year. Cabalar finished at 11-under with rounds of 64-65.

Wendell Kop is in Senior Flight, along with Phil Anamizu, Carl Ho and Paul Kimura.
