Oscar-winning director Cameron Crowe is looking for background extras in Hawaii for his new film, set to shoot here in late September, according to Rich King Casting in Los Angeles and the Hawaii office of SAG-AFTRA, the actors union.
One casting session will be held for union members and one a day later for the general public.
The adventure/romance film, which at one point was called "Deep Tiki" but has now become "Untitled Cameron Crowe Project," will star Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone and Rachel McAdams. Cooper will play a military contractor who returns to Honolulu — site of his greatest career triumphs — and reconnects with a long-lost love, played by McAdams. At the same time, Cooper’s character also falls for an Air Force handler, played by Stone.
Crowe is looking for adult men and women "of all shapes, sizes and ethnicities" with a special emphasis on military personnel, Hawaiian dancers and musicians.
The SAG-AFTRA session for union members — a "meet and greet" — will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Studio 909 of the Musicians Association of Hawaii offices, 949 Kapiolani Blvd. It will not be held at the SAG-AFTRA offices, which had been listed as the site last week on Craigslist.
The nonunion session will be noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Ke‘ehi Lagoon Memorial, 2685 N. Nimitz Highway.
For either session, applicants should bring a pen and a 3-by-5-inch photograph of themselves.
Crowe won a screenplay Oscar for his 2000 film "Almost Famous." He also received Oscar nominations for writing and best picture for his 1996 film "Jerry Maguire," which he also directed.
Cooper was nominated for an Oscar earlier this year for his part in "Silver Linings Playbook."
Crowe is the second major Hollywood director scheduled to film in Hawaii this fall. Next week, Tim Burton will film scenes for "Big Eyes," a biopic about artist and former Hawaii resident Margaret Keane.
