The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life: Kagoshima, Japan
COURTESY PHOTO
FROM THE PAST: For Hawaii natives Barrett Ishida, left, and Courtnee Ho, the sight of a Liberty House sign 10 days ago in Kagoshima, Japan, was nostalgic as well as startling. However, this Liberty House wasn't the familiar Hawaii department store, but a hair salon in the Tenmokan Shopping Arcade in Kagoshima. Ishida, who works as an alternative language teacher in Fukuoka, and Ho, a pharmacy student in Chicago who was in Japan to visit her brother, are from Hawaii Kai.
