KCC team places fourth in national competition
Kapiolani Community College’s Team Hawaii 2013 took fourth place at the American Culinary Federation’s national student team championship in Las Vegas last week.
It was a close competition, with scores between first and fourth place separated by just half a point.
The team included Emi Akiyama, Joy Yamane, Ian Sagayaga, Bickna Sim and Hwanjae Lee. Coaches were chefs Dave Brown and Grant Sato.
Team Hawaii, the Western Regional champions, challenged students from the Central, Southeast and Northeast regions and a military team.
Church luau features feast of Hawaiian food
Enjoy a spread of Hawaiian food at Lili‘uokalani Protestant Church’s annual luau Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
The menu is extensive, including kalua pig cooked in an imu on-site, chicken long rice, squid luau, lomi salmon, poke, crab, opihi, kulolo, haupia, pineapple, sweet potato, poi and rice.
Eat at the Haleiwa church, at 66-090 Kamehameha Highway, and enjoy live entertainment, for a $20 donation. Those who want to eat at home can pick up their plates for a $17.50 donation.

Honey class will offer tips on pests, farming
Find out all about local honey firsthand from Howard McGinnis, owner of Nalo Meli Honey, at a workshop Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon.
McGinnis will cover invasive pests that affect hive health and how to welcome bees from other pollinators to your farm.
