Water leak shuts part of Ward Avenue
Two makai-bound lanes on Ward Avenue, between South King Street and Kapiolani Boulevard, were closed Tuesday, and one mauka-bound lane was being contra-flowed to allow for one traffic lane in each direction while Board of Water Supply crews repair a leak to an 8-inch waterline.
Honolulu Police Department officers were assisting with traffic flow.
According to the Board of Water Supply, no customers are without water service due to the leak near the Hawaiian Electric Co. facility.
The waterline was installed in 1975. The leak was discovered while work was underway on the BWS Water System Improvement Project on Ward Avenue. However, the leak was not caused by the improvement project work, according to the news release.
Roadwork to close Ewa H-1 lanes at night
Overnight lane closures on the Ewa-bound H-1 will continue to affect evening commuters this week.
Three westbound lanes will be closed between the H-1/H-2 merge and the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp from 7:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The closures are for ongoing viaduct repairs there, according to state officials.
Kauai motorists get fewer tickets for bad driving
Traffic violations on Kauai dropped last year, the Garden Island newspaper reported Tuesday.
Kauai police said moving violations in 2012 were 8,189, compared with 10,629 in 2011 and 8,668 in 2010. Only 2009 had fewer violations with 6,495 tickets issued that year, the newspaper reported.
There have been 4,134 moving violations this year through June.
Kauai police officials attribute the decline to effective enforcement and safer driving habits.
There have been three road fatalities so far on Kauai in 2013, while there were eight in 2012, six in 2011, 10 in 2010 and eight in 2009.
