After nearly a month removed from competing in sprint-style canoe races, Kamoa Kalama returned to the familiar Kailua Canoe Club koa canoe with an unusual sense of anxiety Sunday.
The veteran paddler had not raced in an official Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association event since he and fellow men’s golden masters 55 crew mates from Kailua claimed gold at the Father’s Day regatta in Nanakuli on June 16. The hiatus was justified, however, as Kalama and other members of the local paddling community, including veteran waterman Joseph "Nappy" Napoleon, traveled Down Under to help spread knowledge of outrigger canoe racing and its culture.
"I’ve been taking teams down there for 25 years now, and it serves as their season-culminating event —it’s their Molokai Hoe, their world championship," Kalama said. "It involves intense racing over a four-day period."
Kalama brought a group of paddlers representing multiple Oahu clubs, including Kailua and Keahiakahoe, to the 30th annual Gatorade Clash of the Paddles, formerly known as the Hamilton Cup, on Hamilton Island, situated northeast of Australia in the Coral Sea. The event serves as the country’s marquee water sports gathering, and featured long-distance canoe paddling races as well as competitions for surf ski, dragon boating, stand-up and prone board competitors.
The competition ran from June 20-24, and in addition to featuring more than 100 short- and medium-range sprints, was headlined by a 26-mile outrigger canoe race dubbed the Hamilton Cup Marathon. The latter is known within the paddling community as one of the toughest endurance races in the world.
"We spend time doing cultural training and clinics, and also talk about the canoe and how it’s built," Kalama said. "It’s good to get that international exposure. But, the best racing is here, and when you’re away, somebody else wins the race (in OHCRA competition) and develops a lot of confidence. It’s probably the most anxiety I’ve felt in years."

After returning to race in OHCRA’s John D. Kaupiko Regatta on Sunday in the calm waters of Kaneohe Bay, just off Marine Corps Base Hawaii, it turned out Kalama had nothing to be nervous about. Kailua’s men’s 55 crew of Pat Erwin, Clifford Tillotson, Walter Hamasaki, Nyle Warinner, Paul Hewlett and Kalama completed the half-mile race in 3 minutes, 51.08 seconds — nearly eight seconds ahead of runner-up Keahiakahoe.
The effort helped Kailua secure its second consecutive AAA Division (27-39 crews entered) title and overall regatta win, as the club garnered 178 points with 10 race victories and held off Hui Nalu (168 points), Outrigger (147 points) and Lanikai (143 points) in the large division.
Through 25 races, Kailua established a slim 102-100 advantage over Hui Nalu, while Outrigger remained 11 points off the lead. Twelve races later, Kailua had extended its margin over Hui Nalu to five points, 153-148, and won two of the last three events to clinch the victory.
Hui Nalu entered the regatta as one of the favorites, having won OHCRA’s first three regattas of the season by a combined 10 points before Kailua — the four-time defending OHCRA champion and defending state co-title holder—notched a victory on June 23 at Waimanalo.
In addition to battling for gold in individual races, crews continued pushing toward qualification for the state championship regatta scheduled for Aug. 3 at Hanalei Bay, Kauai.
"Today was a critical race as we continue to qualify crews as a club for the state championships," said Kalama, who also serves as a coach within Kailua’s program. "You don’t want it to come down to (Sunday’s) Oahu championships when you’re right on the bubble. Some of the adjustments we made today were to address that."
Keahiakahoe captured the AA Division (14-26 crews entered) crown with 80 points, and Healani claimed the A division (1-13 crews entered) trophy with 37 points.
