Scammers pretend to be tax collectors
Scammers are claiming to represent the County of Kauai Real Property Tax Collection office to collect money and personal information from unsuspecting residents, Kauai police warn.
Under no circumstance would a county tax official call a property owner to solicit payment, the county said.
Police said a person claiming to represent the county’s Real Property Tax Collection office called a resident and said she was delinquent in her tax payments. The caller requested payment along with the woman’s name, age, date of birth and Social Security number.
The woman hung up and contacted the county tax office. A clerk told her she was current on her payments and that no one from the office had called her.
Those who suspect a scam are asked to call Kauai police at 241-1711.
