Waikiki sewer project nearing an end

Completion of a newly installed Waikiki Beachwalk force main line will mean the city can now remove the so-called “black noodle” wastewater pipes from the Ala Wai Canal, Mayor Kirk Caldwell said today.

The temporary pipe was installed as an emergency measure following a major sewer break of a force main on Kaiolu Street in March 2006.

Removal of the 48-inch pipe will begin July 15.

In May 2012, the temporary pipe floated to the surface of the canal near the Hawai’i Convention Center after air bubbles entered the tube. While there was no damage to the pipe or the surrounding environment, it created a visual spectacle for several days.
