Barnes & Noble, library want kids to keep reading
Barnes & Noble and the Hawaii State Public Library System are both offering summer reading programs that will help keep kids’ minds active during the break from school.
Barnes & Noble’s program encourages young readers to delve into books of their own choosing and earn a free book in the process. Readers pick any eight books for the summer to be recorded into an "Imagination’s Destination" reading journal, copies of which are now available at the Ala Moana and Kahala Mall stores. Return the completed journals to the stores by Sept. 3, and choose a free book from the list featured on the back of the journal, with 20 titles suitable for those in grades 1 through 6.
Free books include "Fancy Nancy: Nancy Clancy, Super Sleuth," by Jane O’Connor; "The Adventures of Captain Underpants," by Dav Pilkey; and "Hoot," by Carl Hiaasen.
Readers of all ages — children, teens and adults — can participate in public library programs from June 2 through July 6, with registration beginning Tuesday.
Children up to grade 6 can join the "Dig Into Reading" program and explore all things related to under the ground and sea. To help spur interest, each participant will receive a gardening kit that will include seeds, a biodegradable pot, potting soil and planting instructions.
Select libraries will also feature special programs related to the summer program. Check your local library for details.
