Ching, Spalding win OC-1 titles
California’s Danny Ching won his second men’s title in four years and Maui’s Lauren Spalding her eighth women’s title at Sunday’s Steinlager Kaiwi Channel OC-1 World Championships.
Ching held off the Big Island’s Daniel Chun in a half-mile sprint to the finish line behind The Shack-Hawaii Kai, with Ching winning in 4:58:03. Chun finished two seconds behind with Kailua’s Pat Dolan third in 4:58:29.
Spalding finished the 32-mile race in 5:30:06. Caral Darbishire was second (5:32:51) and Lindsey Shank third (5:34:06).
Sixty-three of the 71 competitors completed the race from Molokai to Oahu with organizers describing the conditions as "extreme and brutal" with heat, headwinds and lack of following seas.
