Man charged in Waikiki copper theft

A 24-year-old homeless man was charged with stealing copper tubing from the storage area of a Waikiki hotel early Sunday morning.

Jonathan Williams is scheduled to make his appearance in District Court this morning on a charge of theft of copper from the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio hotel.

A hotel security guard told police he saw Williams and a 27-year-old woman taking pieces of copper tubing from a storage area Saturday around 12:40 p.m.

Police said the pair fled, but returned to the hotel around 1:40 a.m. where they were identified and arrested on suspicion of theft of copper.

Prosecutors declined to charge the woman who police said has a California address.

Bail for Williams was set at $11,000.
