1 of 2 dogs that snarled freeway traffic reunited with owner
One of two dogs that caused a major traffic snarl on the H-1 highway near the Liliha Street overpass was reunited with its owner this afternoon, the Hawaiian Humane Society reported.
Westbound traffic on the H-1 Freeway came to a standstill this morning when two small dogs ran loose on the freeway.
Police said one dog was killed on the freeway before the Palama offramp. A Hawaiian Humane Society spokeswoman said both dogs were owned by the same person and had come from a home’s yard in the Liliha area.
Officers arrived around 6:45 a.m. to find the second dog backed up against the barrier separating the westbound and eastbound lanes near the Liliha overpass.
Police used their motorcycles to shield the dog from traffic, stopping traffic when the dog bolted across the freeway lanes.
After several unsuccessful attempts at catching the dog, police were able to leash it at 6:58 a.m.

But traffic remained heavy for the remainder of the morning rush hour as an automobile collision occurred at the Vineyard offramp just as police collared the dog.
Although previously identified as a Chihuahua or miniature pinscher, the surviving male black and brown dog is probably a mixture of the two breeds, according to Hawaiian Humane Society spokeswoman Jacque LeBlanc. The dog had no tag or microchip.
