A four-month manhunt ended Saturday when Kauai police arrested 37-year-old Justin Wynn Klein, who allegedly threw a Japanese visitor from a cliff on Kauai’s North Shore.
Klein had been the subject of a multi-agency search since mid-December.
On Saturday afternoon a tipster alerted police to Klein’s possible presence at Lydgate Beach Park in Kapaa. Officers located and arrested Klein around 5:30 p.m. near the pavilions.
On Dec. 16, Klein was reportedly seen throwing a 31-year-old woman from a cliff in Kalalau Valley.
He then fled.
Police, firefighters and officers with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the hiking trail and conducted an unsuccessful four-day sweep of the area. Police continued an islandwide investigation.
The woman spent several days in critical condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihue and remained hospitalized for more than a week before returning to Japan with her family.
In December a Kauai grand jury indicted Klein on a charge of second-degree attempted murder.
Bail on the warrant was set at $1 million.
Klein’s initial court appearance has yet to be scheduled. He remains in police custody.
