"Arsenic and Old Age," by A.L. Rogers (CreateSpace, $9.57): Honolulu police are called in to investigate the death of a Hawaiian matriarch at a fictional retirement community. The suspects include staff, residents and the victim’s dysfunctional family.
"Beer in the Bilges: Sailing Adventures in the South Pacific," by Alan Boreham, Peter Jinks and Bob Rossiter (iUniverse, $24.95): In this collective memoir, a colorful trio of experienced sailors from Australia, New Zealand and Canada recount three separate yachting trips to the South Pacific and Hawaii during the 1980s. The genesis of the book came together in Honolulu."Death Goes Postal," by Rosemary and Larry Mild (Trade Paper, $14.95, also e-book): The Honolulu husband-and-wife team creates a new mystery series featuring a long-married couple who take over ownership of a rare-book store and become amateur sleuths in the process. They find out that the store’s previous owner was murdered for hiding rare artifacts."last edited [insert time here]," by Ye-Wen Ho (Tinfish Press, $13): A pocket-size collection of playful experimental poetry that is a confluence of words and thoughts based on Google searches.
"A River That Is Congo: Of Rulers and Ruled," by Paul Stam (All Things That Matter Press, $16.99, also e-book): The Hawaii writer’s historical novel is based on tales he heard while growing up in the Belgian Congo. A newly arrived military man and fortune hunter exposes the atrocities perpetrated by King Leopold II’s agents on the natives.
"Jack London Is Dead: Contemporary Euro-American Poetry of Hawai‘i (and Some Stories)," edited by Susan M. Schultz (Tinfish Press, $20): A fascinating anthology of works by 17 writers whose work speaks of their experiences either visiting or living in Hawaii’s multicultural society, with revealing essays by each of the contributors.
